Van's series of RV sport planes started with a modification to the Stits Playboy Van dubbed the RV-1.  He designed and built a set of cantilever metal wings that improved the performance.  He also gave it a canopy and spring gear.  You can see the outline of the RV-3--and the rest of the RV line--in this little rascal.
